TechStop™

Hello, I am Robert G. Male. Welcome to TechStop™. Here you will find links that I think are of interest. Furthermore these are links that I want to keep track of because they have given me either ideas or some other form of inspiration for my writing. Links are listed in order lowest to highest both in the date they are given and the order in which they appear (meaning: read them from the bottom up for a certain day's list). Some of these sites may require you to sign up for free. Without further ado, the links...

When Companies Become Countries
  • This article presents an interesting idea suitable for the near future as outlined or the far future to consider existing countries taken over by a company or super-conglomerate, or as a circumstance on spaceships, space stations, and alien planets. Alternate histories are another possibility considering Walt Disney's plan for Epcot as a city. There are pitfalls as stated in the article and the old idea of the Company Store from American history is it's own valid idea to run with. Consider also the creation or re-creation of an area like in Qatar.

Pranav Mistry: The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology (video 13:51)
    • This video is a follow up to a previous video in the entry TED: MIT Students Turn Internet Into a Sixth Human Sense. Pranav is back with even more features to the sixth sense technology. The thing to remember is that the hardware for this system was all standard pre-existing parts put into a custom rig. There was nothing extraordinary about the physical system, it was all in the application of that hardware, and of course the special software. This time out the envelope is pushed even further including a use case that makes the newest, flashiest, tablets and smart phones out there seem like low-hanging, antiquated, fruit.

CIA's Secret Fear: High-Tech Border Checks Will Blow Spies' Cover
    • This asks and ellicits a number of questions that can be interesting, or exciting in the design of a setting for any kind of film, fiction, or game with spies. There is always a push and pull and constant escalation between defense and breaking a defense where spycraft is involved. A question not directly ask or answered deals with these kinds of situations where partial allies are involved, such as when different groups run the government from politcal term to politcial term, or to mind new members to collective national groups.

The Future of Augmented Reality (video 3:26)
    • The name Articulated Naturality Web sounds like a lot of market speak but the depth of the information they wish it to present is intruiging as is the mash-up of information it will give. The planning abilitity expressed in the office space example is the most interesting. Of course it could be very useful to add other serivces such as knowing where your contacts are, and other social context, as well as availability of different services, scheduling, and all of the information currently plugged in piecemeal to current alternate reality products.

Peer-to-Peer Filesharing: Cold War Tactics Revisited
    • I am always interested when spycraft and technology intersect. This simple modern method can easily be expanded to more complex and technical methods. However including specific locations and requiring physical presence to access data adds security or complication depending on which side of the equation you are interested. Exclusivity plays a factor as well, or can for many locations, as well as needing to be in the know of where to go for access.
